Message from the Executive Director, Professional Managers Association

Thomas R. Burger

The professional Managers Association is celebrating its 33rd birthday this year.  Since 1981 when this organization was started by IRS managers for IRS managers and 31 years later we are still working for you.  PMA now also encourages management assistants and other NBU's to join PMA as well.  Now more than ever we need you to help us help you.  Everyday there is another attack on federal employees, their pay or their benefits.  The rhetoric from the politicians is constant; reduce the number of federal employees, reduce their pay they are paid too much, reduce their benefits they get too much, reduce their pensions they are too high and finally eliminate their increases they don't need it.

The negativity toward federal employees is at an all-time high. Yet day in and day out federal managers in the IRS and other agencies continue to do their job and do it well in spite of the constant barrage of negative comments from those elected to represent "all" of us.

To be sure we are in a financial crisis but to think that this crisis can be fixed by eliminating 10% of the federal workforce or by reducing their pay and/or benefits is a mistake.  The IRS alone is responsible for funding the majority of the US government.  It brings in over two trillion dollars to the US Treasury.  Cuts to our budget are counter-productive and that is backed up by many facts and statistics.

All of these attacks are having a negative impact on morale and just look at the backlog of retirement cases sitting in OPM.  At the end of December 2011, nearly 50,000 people had decided it was time to retire.  A few weeks prior OPM had over 60,000 cases sitting in their inventory.  Unfortunately many of these people are going to wait months to get their retirement finalized.  This is unfair for someone who has dedicated their lives to the US Government.

So what can you do to help us help you?  Join PMA by going to our website at www.promanager.org.  If you are already a member, go out and recruit one of your fellow managers, management assistants or an NBU.  All are eligible to join PMA and for $3.50 a pay period or $91 a year, it's an inexpensive way for you to have a voice in what happens.  I hope you join the hundreds of other folks that have decided to add their voice to PMA.

Thanks,
Tom
