Are You Leaving A Valuable Employee Benefit On The Table?

August 30, 2024

As a federal manager, did you know that your agency may reimburse you for up to 50% of your professional liability insurance (PLI) annual premium? If you didn’t, you may be leaving a valuable benefit for federal managers on the table. Public law requires agencies to use funds appropriated for salaries and expenses to pay an amount not to exceed one-half the costs for eligible supervisors, management officials, and law enforcement officers who elect to purchase professional liability insurance, up to $150 per employee per calendar year.

Federal managers can submit for reimbursement each year, with reimbursements issued through each Department’s automated personnel/payroll system, the National Finance Center (NFC) or through Direct Deposit/Electronic Funds Transfer (DD/EFT). Reimbursement eligibility is determined by the agency and reimbursement amounts may differ. The federal government decided to provide reimbursement for managers, supervisors, and law enforcement officers because these positions come with incredibly high levels of responsibility and accountability. Despite years of federal service, dedication to your agency, and often through no fault of your own, bad things can happen to good federal managers. When this happens, it is crucial that you have representation that understands your vulnerabilities.

FEDS has been successfully defending federal managers against allegations of hostile work environments, EEO complaints, and other actions that federal managers face on a daily basis for nearly two decades. Federal managers have professional exposures that can vary based on agency mission and budget, the amount or manner of media coverage associated with the latest news story or political agenda, and/or the effects this has on the contentment and performance of your employees – not the performance of your duties or the integrity with which you perform your duties.

FEDS offers policies with $1 million, $2 million, or $3 million for legal defense and indemnity for personal capacity lawsuits. Additionally, all policies include $200,000 in coverage for administrative actions and $100,000 in coverage for criminal investigations. Annual premiums for FEDS Protection PLI start at $290, which is less than it would typically cost to hire a federal employment lawyer for an hour. Federal managers are eligible for agency reimbursement up to 50% of the cost of the annual premium.
